Fonseca Vintage Ports
Fonseca has belonged to the first rank of Vintage Port producers since the mid-nineteenth century. Fonseca Vintage Ports are noted for their luscious fruitiness which develops great opulence and complexity with age. Wines born of inspired winemaking and a thorough understanding of viticulture and terroir, they appeal, perhaps more than any other house's Vintage Ports, to the enthusiast and connoisseur.
Vintage Ports represent the finest produce of a single exceptional year. Unlike Ports which age in wood, Vintage Ports will continue to age and improve in bottle for decades, their character bearing the imprint of both vineyard and wine maker.
A constant thread that runs through the history of Fonseca is the family's close involvement with the making of the firm's Vintage Ports. Throughout the 20th century, the making of Fonseca Vintage Ports was overseen by only four family members, Frank, Dorothy, Bruce and David Guimaraens and this has helped to make Fonseca one of the most stylistically consistent of Vintage Port producers.
The firm's Vintage Ports are drawn from its own quintas or estates: Cruzeiro and Santo António in the Pinhão Valley, which have contributed to the firm's Vintage Port blend for 100 years, as well the Távora Valley property of Panascal. Fonseca is unique among Port houses in making three different types of Vintage Port.
Fonseca Vintage Ports are released only when a year produces outstanding wines with long term ageing potential. These classic Vintage Ports are a blend of wines from Cruzeiro, Santo António and Panascal. Cruzeiro contributes concentrated black fruit flavours and firm tannic 'grip'. Panascal adds an opulent luscious fruitiness and a dense velvety texture. Finally, Santo António brings complexity and vibrancy with its fine scented character and fresh acidity.
Although they can be enjoyed when young, Fonseca Vintage Ports will continue to improve in bottle for many decades. They have the stamina and aromatic potential to last for over a hundred years. Attracting the highest scores and auction prices, they are favoured not only by fine wine enthusiasts but also by collectors and investors.
Tasting Note
Dark red, ruby edge.
Dense blackcurrant fruit, very fresh and elegant, incredible balance of fine fruit and the first hints of bottle maturity.
A textbook year in the vineyard, with low yields and moderate temperatures throughout the season has made this incredibly dense port with a freshness of fruit in character with the 1963s and 1912s.
On the palate it is very full, with lots of fine tannins which carry loads of fresh blackcurrant fruit. The youth it still holds today is the testament of how extraordinary this vintage is, and the capacity it has to continue to age for the rest of this century.

The Wine Spectator
April 1997 – 100 Points
"Hold on to your hat. This is the best Fonseca since 1977 - probably even better than that of the legendary vintage - more like the breathtaking 1948. Masses of color, aroma and fruit flavor. Big, full bodied and very sweet, with tons of tannins and a sweet finish."
James Suckling
The Wine Spectator
January 1998
"Choosing the Wine of the Year is no easy task when there are so many classic wines worthy of the honor. It is even more difficult when two of those wines have perfect 100-point ratings and are made by the same winemaker. So we decided to double your pleasure by choosing both Fonseca Vintage Port 1994 and Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port 1994 for the No. 1 position on Wine Spectator's annual Top 100 list for 1997.
This marks the first time in the history of Wine Spectator's Top 100 that two wines have earned top honor."
Notes on the year
The winter of 1993-1994 was extremely wet throughout the region. As a result, most vineyards experienced a very low yield, with production down as much as 75% in relation to the average in some areas of the Douro.
In spite of the poor start, the growing season was satisfactory, with dry warm weather broken only by a few short periods of rain (two days in August and four in early September). In contrast to the preceding three years, there were no periods of very intense summer heat in the summer - the temperature never exceeded 38ºc - and this, combined with well-timed rainfall, has resulted in an evenly-ripened crop, producing musts rich in sugar, anthocyanins and aroma.
